italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Caro Filippo e cara Stefania,
I also find the title of the _Gazette_ article objectionable. The
"pizza" metaphor is not intended to elucidate and help anyone
understand a complex situation (which can certainly be accomplished
with humour or indignation as the case may be) but rather to ridicule
and disparage. This way of talking is not only distressingly trite
but also blatantly discriminatory: the result of the Italian election
was in many respects similar to the result of the recent German
elections but I don't recall _The Gazette_ entitling an editorial
"The Sauerkraut Parliament" or something of the sort (not that two or
more evils would make a good, but invariably singling out Italy
certainly adds insult to injury).
And yet even more serious is the fact that this useless and
disrespectful info-bites (passing off as analysis!) play an important
role in promoting the diffuse and facile contempt for politics which
increasingly threatens democratic institutions. I think that the time
has come to be especially vigilant.
Bests.
