Prior to attending the tenth Conference of the IASFM, you might want to
consider attending the:
International Conference on Refugee Rights, 17-19 June 2006 in Toronto, Canada
Networking across borders is essential to effective refugee protection
worldwide
From 17-19 June 2006 refugee and immigrant rights advocates from around
the world will be gathering in Toronto for an International Conference on
Refugee Rights, organized by the Canadian Council for Refugees*at York
Univeraity. Immediately prior to IASFM10, this conference will be an
excellent opportunity for refugee rights advocates from around the world to
collaborate and to agree on strategies to work together more effectively
across borders.
Conference discussions will address issues that challenge refugees and
refugee rights advocates universally. In addition to larger plenary
sessions with interpretation (English, French and Spanish), workshops and
working sessions provide space to develop strategies for further
collaboration, professional development and specific actions:
- To combat negative media portrayals of refugees
- To confront security agendas and their effects on refugees
- To ensure refugees have access to a fair determination process
- To bring human trafficking out of the shadows
- To address internal displacement
- To recognize people without status
- To combat gender violence affecting refugees
- To advance long-term settlement and integration for refugees
- To advocate for the economic, social and cultural rights of refugees
- To assist refugees who wish to return voluntarily to their
countries of origin
- To build welcoming communities
...and many, many more
Members of non-governmental organizations from South Africa, Palestine,
Kenya, Lebanon and Australia will be attending, to name just a few! We
expect to have a broad spectrum of international delegates. Individuals
without an organizational affiliation are also welcome to participate and
special registration rates are available for delegates from the Global South.
