I'm just looking at the eXe tool now, and it seems like something that I
could use very well with staff to develop content.
As this institution is a secondary school and a 6th form, I'm not sure what
content is available to use, is the NLN material available for schools? And
what is FPP?

We take existing paper based materials (produced in MS Word) and just
upload them. It is easy for tutors to get a grip on and get a foot in
the door of a VLE. Word docs that have been set up for people to type
into can still be used. Pdfs upload nicely too.
Some of the paper based multiple choice quizzes we have converted to
electronic format using the VLE's (Moodle) built in quiz tool.
We have also converted a very few with Hot Potatoes and then imported to
Moodle but they have a quirk all their very own in marking.
We have recently looked at using eXe particularly for Cloze questions
and importing as Scorm as they 'look nice' work well and are relatively
simple to create.
Working from scratch is also working. Using the built in web page
composer and typing straight into the VLE is beginning to take off and
then adding things like glossaries using the built in tools, these were
not paper based to begin with just a totally new foray.
We are also beginning to use Macromedias Captivate to generate little
movies and simulations again these were not paper based as you cannot
really have a paper based movie (unless it is a script?)
Video seems to be the flavour of the month at the moment with more and
more people having ideas about putting it into Moodle.
Off the shelf content packages such as NLN materials work well as they
are with no bother. As does FPP but in terms of hole packages we haven't
really tried that many yet!
We did try that Course Genie but for many it was really overkill for
their requirements and had quite a learning curve not to mention price
tag. This is also true for Dreamweaver.

That is a big question!
We populate our VLE (Moodle) by telling tutors how to upload materials
and offering support and off they go and do their thing!
(That makes it sound very rose tinted. Did you mean what tools do we
use? We have all the standard MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, etc)
uploaded. We have web pages created either on the fly with the built in
tools or with products like Dreamweaver. We have bits of Video using
nothing more than Windows Media player to sort them out. )
We also use pre-created content such as NLN materials, and Ferl
Practitioners Programme.
I'd like to say everything in it is relevant and up to date, it is an
ongoing task keeping that way.
Again I'd like to say that all our materials are easy to use, but that
would depend upon who you were speaking to, everyone has difficulty with
something at some point!
Not sure this will be of any help at all to you. I perhaps interpreted
your question in too simple a manner.
