I would suggest reviewing at set intervals of say every 10 or 25 years and
weed as necessary until the order and map are left which should be kept
until the status changes or the road/street disappears/is renamed etc.
Consideration should then be given to archive for research purposes.

Subject: L.A. Highways Records - Retention Periods needed...
> Hi there,
>
> We use the RM Soc's Retention Guidelines for Local Authorities as a
default
> Retention Schedule, though we are gradually developing our own, reflecting
> our personal usage as we go through and audit each directorate here.
>
> I've just had an enquiry about some Highways files that don't seem covered
> in what we've done thus far, or what the RM Soc suggests, and if anyone
has
> any thoughts on retention periods, it'd be very useful. The files are:
>
> Naming and numbering of new developments which can also include naming
> of new streets for larger developments. (We still refer to London
County
> Council files dating back 40 years or more, so this may be an
approriate
> guideline.)
> Stopping up of public highways under S247 of the Town & Country
Planning
> Act (Orders made by the Council) or S116 of the Highways Act ( Orders
> made by the Council whereas the latter are Orders made by a magistrates
> court and presumably held indefinitely in some data bank).
> S38 agreements for the construction and adoption of new roads.
> S177 licences where buildings oversail the public highway.
>
> Many thanks for your thoughts!
