Has anyone else noticed that the pdf DIRKS manual online is incomplete?
It should have 70 pages, but only downloads about 55 of them! Does
anyone know where I can find the remaining 15 pages?

Not so much a practical experience, but the National Archives of
Australia provides some information on 'interviewing' staff as part of
their procedures for developing a Business Classification Scheme. While
it might be over and above what you are trying to do, it might be of
some help.
It is part of their "DIRKS Manual - A Strategic Approach to Managing
Business Information" (Designing and Implementing RecordKeeping
Systems).
The interviewing advice (including the types of questions you should be
asking) is at
http://www.naa.gov.au/recordkeeping/dirks/dirksman/dirks_A2_interviews.h
tml,
while the broader issue of analysing business activity is at
http://www.naa.gov.au/recordkeeping/dirks/dirksman/step_B.html. The full
DIRKS manual is at
http://www.naa.gov.au/recordkeeping/dirks/dirksman/dirks.html.
The Archives Advice "Using shared folders in conjunction with a
recordkeeping system" at
http://www.naa.gov.au/recordkeeping/rkpubs/advices/advice70.html may
also be of use. I assume that the "folders" you talk of are shared
network folders.

These are my views, which strangely coincide with those of my employer.
Full disclosure: I may have at some stage, contributed to the
development of some (albeit small) parts of the DIRKS manual. I am the
author of the Archives Advice.

Subject: Consultation on Business Classification/folder structure etc.
Hi all
We have drafted a document outlining various options for a folder
structure based around a retention schedule we have developed along with
our own recommendation form these options. We have been asked to put
together a formal consultation plan this document and I was wondering if
anyone had any experience/ideas they would like to share regarding this
from similar work/experience maybe consulting on a business
classification scheme. For example
Should users be consulted?
How could/should users be consulted?
What should users be consulted on?
I would personally like to make this as open as possible so that users
or at least a cross section of users have a chance to feedback on this
but do not necessarily want to make it one of these never ending tasks
that go round in circles. I am thinking along the lines of sharing the
document widely and then running small focus groups for those users who
have something to say/feedback on the recommendation.
Any ideas/experiences gratefully received.
Thanks
David
