Not really in the mood to say much more about this right now but let me go
back to the Fisk article:
>The only difference now is that we are pushing hundreds of
thousands of Arabs though the butchers' shops -"<
Now it is all too appallingly obvious that the death-toll in Iraq is huge
and disgusting, this morning the radio tells that 60 people were killed for
some reason, the monotonous litany goes on day after day, but it is NOT 'we'
who are doing it. Certainly the Allied invasion, which I regard as
reprehensible, must have been responsible for deaths in the thousands, but
what has happened subsequently is largely a result of the post-Saddam power
vacuum, not as a direct result of the acts of British or American or other
Allied troops.
At the moment here we have the fascinating story of how Tessa Jowell, the
Minister of Culture, the one who wants to turn libraries into places like
MacDonalds, happens to be married to a man who is one of Silvio Berlusconi's
money-launderers, I mention that not just as an example of fuming outrage,
though outraged I am, but as a particular of how little we know about what
really goes on, the Blair government is furiously distancing itself from
her, because she's been +found out+. But that latter phrase applies to the
whole situation in Iraq, not just the troops, every mouthing cleric is part
of it.
