Dear List
It seems that that the giving of coal as part payment has existed for a long
time.
I thought that you might be interested to know that in Wensleydale the free
coal was also extended at one time to other people on parish relief as well as
the miners
1164/1762 ZBO 1/14/68 17th Feb 1795 Maude to T Orde
(Thomas Orde was the first Baron Bolton)
The snow is gone without any injurious flood, yesterday was soft, but today
a hard frost.
Part of your Bounty is distributed, and Mr Morley meets me today, to finish
the rest.
The objects are grateful, and indulgence never could be more seasonally
relieved.
As Mr Morley deemed the dole £5:5:0 we fixed it there, which I hope you will
approve. Coals are among the articles of charity. And we hope to get them
led gratis from Preston Moor.
