medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (31. March) is the feast day of:
Stephen of Mar Saba (d. 794) Mar Saba was the most famous monastery
of Palestine for a long time, and Stephen was one of its greatest
luminaries. He held several offices in the laura before becoming a
hermit. He became a spiritual advisor to many of the monks and had a
great reputation for compassion---which extended to birds, gazelles,
and even worms.
Guy of Pomposa (d. 1046) Guy (Guido/Wido) was born near Ravenna to a
prosperous family. As an adult, he decided to give it all up for
God. He sold his fine clothes and gave the proceeds to the poor,
went on pilgrimage to Rome, and then settled in as apprentice to a
hermit. G. went on to the abbey of Pomposa (near Ferrara) and became
abbot there.
Bonaventure of Forli (blessed) (d. 1491) Bonaventura Tornielli
became a Servite at the age of 37. He was an eloquent preacher who
preached a major revival throughout the Papal States. B. was elected
vicar general of the order in 1488.
