medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I don't know of any evidence for women cutting off their noses to avoid marriage, but Jane Tibbetts Schulenburg has an paper on nuns who cut off their noses to avoid rape by Vikings etc. The article is "The Heroecs of Virginity: Brides of Christ and Scrificial Mutilation" in WOMEN IN THE MIDDLE AGES AND THE RENAISSANCE, edited by Mary Beth Rose (Syracuse, 1986);29-72.
