I've already received this query from another list, and replied to Honor explaining what we have here at the Institute (which isn't a lot!) It occurs to me that other list members might be interested to know about the Institute's historical collections, so here's a very brief explanation:
We have a very large collection, called the Historical Textbooks Collection, which includes schoolbooks on all subjects. Most of them are C20th, but there are some earlier ones. Altogether, about 18,000 items are catalogued,mostly only in a card catalogue. There's a lot more, but we haven't yet got funding to catalogue it.
We also have a number of other Special Collections which include small numbers of children's books and school books. These include our History of Education Collection (mostly educational theory, but a small number of textbooks as well), the Baines Collection (books from the nurseries of the Baines family, dating from the C18th and C19th - a delightful collection) and the Ian Michael Collection (a collection of English Grammars and related texts).
