One of the main criticisms of traditional writing on work and employment
is the assumption that workers are homogenous and that the 'norm' has
been taken as white, male and middle-aged. In addition workers who have
a disability have, more often than not, been considered less useful as
workers regardless of their level of ability. Almost everyone has some
experience of work before they have left their teenage years and
continue to work, albeit sometimes intermittently, for most of their
lives. Workforces are therefore made up of diverse social and
demographic groups. Furthermore, the way workers experience the world
of work is deeply coloured by their demographic and social
characteristics. This has usually been in a negative direction for
those workers falling outside the able-bodied, white, male, middle-aged
'norm' and who are more likely to suffer discrimination in a variety of
ways. Social movements throughout history have been based on challenging
inequality of treatment in one form or another. In a capitalist society
life-chances for the majority of people are determined by access to and
quality of paid employment. The workplace is therefore the focus for
much of the pressure towards equality. In acknowledgement of these
issues the Annual Conference of the British Universities Industrial
Relations Association (BUIRA) convenes a stream dedicated to Equality
and Diversity and invites papers on this topic. This year papers
submitted to the conference stream will be considered for a special
issue of EOI. Details of how to submit a paper to the BUIRA
conference can be found at: http://www.buira.org.uk/ The closing date
