New Activism in the Workplace: The Role of Union Learning Representatives (ULRs) in the South West Region
The last 25 years have witnessed a marked decline in the presence, role and status of union workplace representation in Britain. The near collapse of the shop steward system has created a ‘representational gap’ that arguably needs addressing. As part of the debate over ‘union revitalisation’ this project aims to assess the potential for union learning representatives (ULRs) to provide new outlets for activism and to help unions raise their profile in the workplace. This study is designed to address issues regarding their role within existing union structures, the difficulties they may encounter and any characteristics they might typically display.
Suitable candidates likely have a Masters degree in the Social Sciences, a general interest in employment studies and preferably a background in union activism, although candidates with a different profile are also encouraged to apply.
