About the program
Experiencing the New Europe, is a three-week international summer program,
which combines classroom study with on-site experiential learning to explore
cultural, political and economic transformation in the newly integrated
Europe. Through its interactive curriculum, Experiencing the New Europe,
studies how large processes of geopolitical change (the fall of Communism,
democratization, European integration) play out in the local setting of a
large European city and its inhabitants. The program is based in Wroclaw, a
large academic and historical city located in the Southwest of Poland, the
capital of the region of Lower Silesia. The city of Wroclaw offers a unique
urban and cultural experience to international students who will have the
opportunity to study European culture, society and politics through
interactive learning methods, by visiting governmental, academic, business
and civil society organizations in the city and the region.
Course description
The Summer Institute offers an interdisciplinary course, European
Urban Cultures and Societies in Transformation. The course is divided into
two parts which have a different focus and can be credited as two different
subjects - Culture and Urban Environment (Anthropology, Urban Studies), and
Social History and Politics (History, Political Studies). The course is
co-taught by European and US anthropology faculty (Hana Èervinková, Ph.D.,
University of Lower Silesia, Wroclaw, Poland; Krista Hegburg, Columbia
University, New York, USA; Tom Chivens, Ph.D., Rice University, USA).
Morning classroom sessions are combined with afternoon site-visits, film
screenings and discussions, guest lectures and study tours to Swidnica and
Walbrzych, O¶wiêcim and Krakow and optionally to Prague.
Eligibility and program costs
The Summer Institute is designed for third or fourth-year university
students who wish to enrich their studies with a short-term study-abroad
program. The program is taught in English. The full cost of participation is
1,300 USD and includes all classes, afternoon site-visits and guest
lectures, accommodation in a comfortable hotel in the old center of Wroclaw,
breakfast on all days and study tours (including Prague). Students can also
choose to participate under the following financial conditions: full program
without hotel accommodation and breakfasts - 630 USD or full program without
hotel accommodation and breakfasts and a trip to Prague - 500 USD. The
classes will be held in the Museum of Architecture in the center of the
city, 10 minutes of walking distance from the hotel.
Co-organizers and partners
The International Summer School is organized in collaboration with
Tennessee Technological University, State University of New York at
Brockport (SUNY), the Foundation for the Study of Culture and Education ULS
AAE in Wroclaw and in partnership with the Kolegium Europy Wschodniej in
Wroclaw and the Museum of Architecture in Wroclaw. The program is held under
the honorary patronage of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of
Poland and the Mayor of Wroclaw. Students at US universities can obtain
credits through SUNY or TTU. European students are eligible for ECTS
