CIRM 2006:
Destinations and Locations: Exploring the Multiple Identities of Place
CALL FOR PAPERS
CIRM (Critical Issues in Retailing and Marketing) is an annual event organised by
Manchester Metropolitan University Business School to provide a forum for presenting the
latest issues of current relevance to decision makers in retailing, marketing and place
management. It aims specifically to bring together practitioners and academics, hopefully
to the benefit of both. One (Irish) delegate summed up last year's conference as "Good
papers, good food, and good craic!"
This year's event focuses on the marketing of places. The purpose of place marketing has
traditionally been to attract people and organisations to visit or invest within a
specific location. Nevertheless, this type of 'destination marketing' has not been without
its critics, and the construction of some destination 'identities' has not always borne
much resemblance to the place where existing residents and companies actually live and
function. New developments in place marketing call for the construction of location
identities that communicate a place's 'brand image,' not only to those that it wishes to
attract, but also to those that live, work, shop or invest there already.
In CIRM 2006 we wish to invite practitioners and academics who are interested in the
marketing, management or development of places to share their research, experiences, and
concerns about this important topic.
We are seeking submissions relating (but not restricted) to:
* urban marketing and management
* regeneration
* place marketing and branding
* destination marketing and tourism
* community development
* neighbourhood renewal
* socio-cultural impacts of place branding and marketing
Papers, in the first instance, should take the form of an abstract of 250 words. These
should be sent to Dr David Bennison, Conference Chair ([log in to unmask]) by Monday 1st
May, 2006. Authors will be informed of the decision by the selection committee by Monday
15th May, 2006. The deadline for final submission of papers for the Conference
Proceedings will be July 31st. - these are to be no more than 5 pages long, plus
references etc.
The conference venue will be MMU Business School located in the city centre with
excellent access to public transport.
The Conference Dinner, on September 6th 2006, will be held at the Lowry Centre
Restaurant, preceded by a drinks reception in the Galleries, where L S Lowry's images of
an industrial past contrast sharply with the 21st century setting in which they are
displayed.
.
Optional field excursions on the afternoon of September 7th to look at aspects of place
identity and marketing within Manchester will be available to delegates at no extra cost.
There will be several keynote speakers, and, for an alternative perspective, Chris
Teasdale and Jan Williams of the Caravan Gallery (www.thecaravangallery.co.uk), will be
contributing to the event.
Place Branding, a peer-reviewed journal of branding and marketing for national, regional
and civic development, will be represented at the Conference. Contributors will be
welcome to take the opportunity to discuss the possible submission of a paper to the
journal with its Publishing Editor, Brenda Rouse.
Two for the price of one!
Dovetailing with CIRM 2006, there is a colloquium organised by the Academy of Marketing's
Branding and Corporate Reputation Special Interest Group being held at the University of
Manchester on September 7th and 8th. Since this may be of interest to some CIRM
contributors, and to take the opportunity of facilitating further the exchange of ideas
and contacts, people who have (separate) papers accepted for both events will have their
conference fee for CIRM waived (courtesy of the Retail Enterprise Network at MMU). The
Colloquium website is http://www.academyofmarketing.info/sigebrand2.cfm, and Dr Stuart
Roper, the organiser, will kindly hold the deadline open to allow time for submissions
from potential CIRM contributors.
