International Reflections on Managing Growth: Government's Communities Plan and Beyond
The Regional Studies Association is sponsoring two one-day seminars - in London and Manchester - examining the 'growth' and 'sustainable communities' agenda in England. Each seminar will reflect on the insights that can be gained from the experience of managing growth, and addressing housing market change, in different parts of mainland Europe. The first seminar - to be held at University College London on the 31 May 2006 - will offer international reflections on managing growth. A morning session will focus on the growth agenda in southern England, looking at the roots of the Communities Plan, how government will pay for growth and for necessary infrastructure, the impacts of 'affordability-based' planning for housing, and how public and private agencies can ensure the delivery of 'quality' outcomes within Growth Areas. A follow-on session in the afternoon will offer a European perspective of these same issues, examining the growth agenda in the Netherlands, poly-centric development and transport in Italy, and the alternative 'mega-city' perspective on growth and future spatial planning. The aim of the seminar is to offer a broader analysis of this very topical and familiar theme.
