Hi All,

Below is text from a recent ad for research
studentships.  There's lots of scope for geographers. 
Can I plug the studentship on offer with the Fashion
Business and Technology Centre (see below)?  Don't be
put off by the name - any geography-esque project on,
say, fashion consumption and/or identity would be
welcome.

RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS
In order to support and develop still further its
research portfolio, the University is offering not
less than 30 research studentships commencing in
September 2006, or as soon as possible thereafter. The
University structures its research activity in 10
Research Institutes and all but two of these
studentships will be held within these Research
Institutes. The studentships are full-time and are
only available to Home and EU candidates.

Studentships are normally held for up to three years.
Holders will register for an MRes/MPhil/PhD degree,
and the University will provide the home tuition fees
for these awards (circa £3,200 p.a. for 2006/2007),
and a subsistence bursary (£12,000 p.a.) with the
exception of full-time fees-only studentships.

Research Institute for Health and Social Change
(RIHSC): One full-time studentship in acquired and
developmental disability, speech and language therapy,
substance misuse, biomedical science or physiotherapy.

English Research Institute (ERI): The research
specialisms of members of the English Research

Dalton Research Institute (DRI): Environmental Science
– climatic and environmental change; soil-plant
microbe interactions and mycorrhizal ecology; global
impacts of aviation; environmental sedimentology; soil
and sediment microbiology; free surface flows;
environmental hydroinformatics. Material Science -
novel polymer materials; nanoparticles; advanced
materials; surface engineering; surface
characterisation; surface interactions with
microorganisms. Engineering - simulation and control;
intelligent control and instrumentation systems; image
engineering and visualisation. Computer Science –
formal logic; image and sensory computation;
intelligent systems; P2P computing; advanced computing

Manchester European Research Institute (MERI)
(http://www.mmu.ac.uk/meri): Applications are invited
for studentships (which may be full-time fees-only)
for projects in: British political and labour history;
European integration and foreign policy; European
Philosophy; European languages, literatures and
cultures (including crime fiction and European film);
and in regional history. Contact Professor C. Archer

The Information Research Institute (TIRI)

areas of Access to Electronic Information, Information
Systems, Information Management and Social
Informatics. TIRI includes the well-established

Education and Social Research Institute (ESRI): 
Applications are particularly sought from those with
research interests in Maths & Science Education,
Difference & Diversity and Multi-Professional
Learning, but applications relevant to the Institute's
other research themes – ICT & Learning and Early Years

Law: The School of Law welcomes applications from
those with excellent degrees in law or other relevant
subjects to do research in any of the following areas:
Impact of new legislation relating to transgender,
transsexual and sexual orientation issues; Commercial
Body Modification in a European Framework; Small
Pressure Groups in the UK and Europe; environmental
law, asylum legal issues, equality laws and there are
other potential areas of study. For further details of

Institute for Biophysical and Clinical Research into
Human Movement (IRM): Nine studentships are available
in the area of the structure and function (including
growth, degeneration and regeneration) of muscle,
connective tissue and bone; neural and motor control;
biomechanics and bioenergetics. Studies are conducted
at the cellular level, using e.g. isolated muscle
fibres, and where appropriate, whole body measurements
of exercise performance, in a variety of normal,
clinical, and elderly populations.

MIRIAD (Manchester Institute for Research and
Innovation in Art and Design):  MIRIAD welcomes
applications from active researchers in Historical and
Contemporary Asian Art, Craft and Culture; Practice as

Theatre and Performance; TV Drama Studies;

Institute for Culture, Gender and the City (ICGC): Two
full-time studentships are available for those with
research interests that complement the interests of
members of the 4 research centres within the
Institute: Cities, Space and Power Group; Gender and
Sexuality Research Centre; Institute for Global
Studies; Manchester Institute for Popular Culture.

The PhD programme in Business and Management has full
ESRC recognition and is a member of EDAMBA. Particular
interests for studentships include complexity, CSR,
gender and diversity, services & public services,
retail, supply chain, innovation, entrepreneurship,
labour relations in MNCs, customer behaviour,
marketing communications & branding. RIBM welcomes
