Salim,
Although not a DGH, we have no on-site paediatric service other than
neonates, who have traditionally been very reluctant to get involved in
anything other than their own field of practice as we have tertiary paeds
unit a couple of miles away. There is however no ED at the tertiary hospital
and we act as the ED for the locality.
There are no specific guidelines on the personnel required for such a
service, but in light of concerns over the potential risks, we did ask for a
visit from the RCPCH and BAEM who were on the whole supportive of the
measures we had put in place.
I wouldn't say we have no problems at all, but no more than I have
experienced in other units with on-site paediatrics.
We are also looking at a total reconfiguration of services locally and as a
result several other hospitals will not have 24/7 paediatric cover -
ironically, the service model we are looking at may in fact give us 24/7
cover but no in-patient unit.
Contact me off list if you want more info.

Hi, I am currently looking into the requirement for a DGH accepting
paediatric patients.
Is it preffered or a requirement that you must have an on site consultant
lead paediatric service to be able to accept paediatric trauma. We are
currently under great pressure to reconfigure our services across East
Sussex.
