Alison, refresh my memory. Who was it who said something along the lines of "Les Murray is popular because he writes the kind of poems Australians want to hear about themselves..." It may have been Tranter?

No, you weren't wrong, although my knowledge of that work is general and
vague and I should check it out more, it was before my time. Kris is on my
list as one of those energies sidelined by the "wars". Also he worked in
other modes, including theatre - quite a few shows at La Mama etc - and he
certainly thinks that his variousness of genre counted against him, as well
as a certain outspokenness. As I think it does with me. (I remember John
Forbes telling me, "I distrust the multi-talented".) As you probably know,
he now runs Collected Works in Melbourne, a triffic bookshop, and is rather
heading for the title of "everybody's favourite poet", though I don't know
if that includes reading his work.
All best
