Dear Liz,
Possibly not an especially radical suggestion, but I usually refer lock
and key enquiries to the Metalwork, Silver and Jewellery Department at
the Victoria & Albert Museum. I know they have quite a large
collection. The Museum of London is sometimes worth a try as well if it
seems likely to be archaeological.
I've never managed to find a specialist collection, so would be
interested to hear if anyone else is aware of one.
Hope this helps

Hi everyone
I have received an enquiry regarding the dating of a key (please see
below). Is there anyone who has any expertise in this area or is there
a museum which specialises in keys and locks?
Thank you in advance for any assistance with this.
Yours

Sir/Madam, I have an old iron key, five and three quarters of an inch
long, it has a shank that tapers back towards the wire bow, which is two
inches across, there isn't a collar or shoulder on the shank, (as I
believe, that were on keys made from the Victorian age on) the bit on
the end is one inch square and approx. quarter of an inch
thick.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns =

I was wondering what age this key could be?
