I did some work analysing our Moodle log files and correlating against
test results, allowing for prior attainment. At a very crude level, the
analysis suggested that those who took a longer-term, more strategic
approach to the VLE (looking back over old forum posts, looking at
old-quizzes, and curiously, updating their profile) got more benefit
from the thing than those who only kept up with the daily homeworks or
current postings. My population was not large, but it was an interesting
proof of concept for data-mining in a school. You might like to check
out the whole data mining ball park to see if there's anything to be
learnt from the finance companies and supermarkets. Loyalty cards for
classes... there's an idea... ;-)
I'd have liked to have some duration figures readily available, although
with a bit of effort these could be calculated for most activity, so it
would have been nice to have, eg
- user X visited resource Y at 10:53 on 10/02/2006, and stayed there for
15 minutes
for example, as the time spent on particular activities might have been
an important factor.
It might also be worth including details of /where/ they visited from,
perhaps in a more meaningful format than IP address - in my context,
school/home/other would have been interesting, but I suspect home can
only be isolated with static IP addresses at the far end.
At some point one would want to factor in courses/groups etc rather than
just student (or resource) ids, but this is perhaps best done outside of
the logging. However, if a resource occurs in more than one course, then
that might matter.
Have a glance at Christian Milani's GISMO, which addresses some of these
ideas from a different perspective -

, although I'm not sure what the present state of his project is.
Interesting project. Good luck with it.
