When I originally set up and managed this list on behalf of Ferl there was
a strict rule that suppliers of VLEs could not advertise. Whenever a
supplier asked to join, I emailed them separately to point this out, and
they were on the whole very respectful of this. When suppliers did break
the rules, I always emailed them off list, and this always had the desired
effect. The didn't do it again. I no longer manage the list, this was taken
in house by Ferl a year or more ago. However, in general, and by extension,
I would not have expected consultants to advertise their services. The list
was (and is) to share information, exchange ideas, publicise relevant
events, and by and large that has worked well.
However, I don't think we should be too hard on Jon. It was a one-off, I
think, and I'm sure this discussion will stop others doing it.
