Hi Rob,
Moodle 1.6 will need MySQL 4.1.16. Please see this discussion at
Moodle.org: http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=38354.
I understand MySQL 4.1.12 will be OK for sites using Latin characters only.
