ESRC 1+3 Quota Studentships
Department of Social and Policy Sciences
University of Bath
PLEASE SEND TO FINAL-YEAR UNDERGRADUATES AND ANY OTHER PROSPECTIVE
APPLICANTS
The Department of Social and Policy Sciences at the University of Bath has
been awarded a quota of four ESRC ‘1+3' studentships in social policy
available from September 2006. These awards provide funding for home/EU
students to undertake a recognised one-year Master's degree followed by a
three-year PhD. The awards cover tuition fees, maintenance costs (around
£12,000 a year) and a training support grant.
The Department (see http://www.bath.ac.uk/soc-pol/) is one of the leading
research centres in social policy in Britain, and we have achieved a
prominent international reputation with grade 5 or its equivalent in all
UK Research Assessment Exercises. We draw together academic staff with
backgrounds in Social Policy, Sociology, Social Work and related
disciplines. We are interested in applications in any of our subject
areas but would particularly like to encourage applications in the
following areas (with potential supervisors in brackets):
· Assets and wealth inequality; personal finances (Karen Rowlingson)
· Children and social policy/sociology of childhood (Tess Ridge)
· Death, dying and loss (Glennys Howarth)
· Lifetime profiling of social policy (Martin Evans)
· Mental health policy and practice (Nick Gould)
· Social responsibility of business, corporate power and civil
society partnerships (Bryn Jones)
· Youth justice; sexuality, sexual violence/sex crime; women and
crime (Joanna Phoenix, Tina Skinner)
See: http://www.bath.ac.uk/soc-pol/staff/ for full details of potential
supervisors.
Applicants should normally have (or be on course to gain) a very good
Honours degree in a relevant discipline. If you are interested, please
download a standard application form at:
http://www.bath.ac.uk/prospectus/postgrad/docs/app-form-2006.doc and state
at section 2 that you wish to be considered for a ‘1+3’ quota award (MRes
taught degree followed by 3-year MPhil/PhD)
The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 17th March 2006.
