Subject: Music and identity: call for presentations 28th February
Call for Papers
Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies - GRADUATE FORUM Tuesday 28th
February, 4:30pm
MUSIC AND IDENTITY
Music conditions both our everyday lives and our aesthetic experience.
For many of us it is the cultural form to which we are most regularly
exposed and through which we most publicly assert our identity and
cultural preferences. Yet it is also one of the most undertheorised and
understudied areas in cultural studies which often focus on the visual
and/or textual to the detriment of the aural. The aim of the graduate
forum is to consider a variety of possible approaches to this complex
and wide-reaching topic, particularly in the context of French, Spanish,
Italian, Portuguese or German-speaking parts of the world.
Suggested topics are:
- The use of music to create a sense of place
- Soundtracks and cinematic narratives
- Music and memory
- Music and gender identity
- Music and cultural / counter-cultural identity
- Music and personal identity
- Music and politics
- Aural landscapes
- Historical perspectives on music and identity formation
- Listener v. performer: passive and active forms of engagement
