By way of epigrammatic contribution, and tongue-in-cheek congratulations to
Andrew (although I do mean the congartulations in earnest, Andrew) here's
two on the subject by George Woodward (flourished 1717-27):
Epigram on Marriage
If 'tis to Marry, when the Knot is ty'd,
Why then they marry, who at Tyburn ride;
And if that Knot, 'till Death, is loos'd by None,
Why then to Marry and be Hang'd's all One.
Another
Had I been Adam I'd have had no Wife,
Believe me, 'tis the wretchedst State in Life:
I'd sooner twenty broken Ribs abide,
Than e'er have One transform'd into a Bride.
Best (!)
Dave
