Sheffield University and British Library Concordat/Charm Studentship in the
study of recordings
____________________________________________________________________________
The Music Department of Sheffield University and the British Library
invite applications for a full-time research studentship for three years,
leading to a PhD, beginning in October 2006. The area of research will be
the study of classical music recordings made between 1925 and 1932, with a
view to understanding the relationship between performance style and
commercial priorities at a time of significant technological change and
competition.
The period 1925 to 1932 is currently one of the research areas of CHARM
(the Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music) at Sheffield
University, with particular reference to the study of the
inter-relationship of commercial and cultural activities, as expressed by
the sound recording industry at this time.
CHARM (the Arts and Humanities Research Councilšs Research Centre for the
History and Analysis of Recorded Music) was established on 1st April 2004,
supported by a substantial five-year grant from the United Kingdom's Arts
and Humanities Research Council. A partnership between the University of
Sheffield, King's College, London, and Royal Holloway, London, CHARM's aim
is to promote the study of music as performance through a focus on
recordings. Its activities include discographical projects, seminars and
research projects such as this.
The research student will be jointly supervised by Eric Clarke at the
University of Sheffield, and by Timothy Day at the British Library Sound
Archive (BLSA), and will work alongside David Patmore, a CHARM research
fellow based at Sheffield University. S/he will spend roughly equal
amounts of time working in each institution. At the BLSA s/he will work in
the office area of the Curator, Classical Music, having access to
materials not available to readers, and at both institutions will receive
appropriate training and support.
The successful student will receive a UK/EU tuition fee waiver, a
maintenance stipend (GBP12,000 in 2005-06), and a Research Training
Support Grant of GBP500 per annum.
Applications, made to Sheffield University on the Sheffield University
Postgraduate Research application form
http://www.shef.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/apply should be received no
later than Friday 31st March 2006. Applicants should meet the same
qualification criteria as for any other research studentship, or should be
able to demonstrate equivalent experience. Please include a statement
explaining your suitability for this project, together with samples of
your recent writing on music. In addition please indicate clearly that you
are applying to study as part of the CHARM research group (section, C,
question 13).
