Ian referred to Pre-1600 mining - this seems to have been fairly busy on
Metcalfe's & Lord Bolton's property in Wensleydale. There are a few bale
sites but I would expect more. The ones found so far are at Keld Heads
(above the top pylon for the aerial ropeway), two or three on the edge of
Ivy Scar, a failrly large one at Little Wegber and a possible at Beldhaw
Hill. Their positions give a good clue as to the mines involved. I have
always assumed that Knott Mine was the 'great rok' in Leland where 'my Lord
Bolton seeketh lead'. It fits the description perfectly and the levels
have been probably opened by fire setting. Would need to excavate the
floor debris to verify this.
