Dear list members,
I have been on this list for quite a while. I've always found it interesting
to read what people say and I've also been grateful, of course, for various
useful tips from you.
As can be detected easily English is not my mother tongue, so let me tell
you
who I am: I'm German and I teach Business Studies and Economics in a
Business School leading up to A-level standard (A2) in Southwest Germany.
Five years ago I started a project (which has actually developed into two
projects by now) to "internationalize" teaching at our school, i.e. I have
been teaching my economics course in English instead of German (bilingual
course). Two years ago we also introduced a new subject called Global
Studies. It involves (inter-)cultural studies (e.g. cultural dimensions
Hall-Hofstede, communication patterns), global geographical aspects
(ressources, migration, demographic changes etc.) as well as international
business studies (location factors, trade and capital flows etc).
International economics and sustainable development are further essential
learning
contents (development strategies, international organisations - WTO, IMF,
Worlbank - and their policies, externalities, emissions trading etc). At
least 50% of the topics must be taught in English. Nothing new for
your curricula, I suspect, but it is for us.
I was a member of the commission that set up the curriculum for this new
subject. I guess that's why the central Educational Ministry of
Baden-Württemberg has asked me and some other members of the old commission
to form a new commission (once a member - always a member!) to work out exam
papers for the A-level exam. Which brings me to my plea: We would be very
grateful if you could give as some advice on how we can get a glimpse of one
or two exam papers from your country which deal with these topics or some of
them. This would enable us to compare standards and, of course, to get ideas
on the type of exams and tasks that are feasible/advisable to set.
Well that's all for now. Thanks for your patience (if you have read this
far).
Greetings from snowy Swabia
Dieter
