Steve is interested in following up on any leadership programs both for
pwds and the general public to help us improve our programs.
Do you know of any programs we can follow up on and people we can talk too.
Thanks,
Frank

Frank, Happy New Year. I'm researching the possibility of doing a
Churchill Fellowship this year. I'm interested in looking at leadership
and disability in the UK and Europe. Do you have any contacts that I
could email and discuss with. I'll put the letter that I send at the
bottom of this so you can also comment on the actual concept.
Thanks Frank.
Dear XXXXX, I'm the Director of leadership Plus a not for profit
community based organization that promotes people with disabilities as
leaders. The organization came about after a debate between the
philanthropic and disability advocacy sectors produced the idea that the
lack of sustained development in disability was due to the lack of
leadership by people with disabilities.
If you have the time to look at our website you'll see what we're up to,
but in brief, our primary focus is on promoting people with disabilities
as leaders in business, community, government and cultural sectors. We
are not in the first instance interested in leadership in the disability
service system, although we hope it could be a spin off. To this end we
undertake, Leadership mentoring programs, leadership internships, a
leadership program, research and advocacy that promotes people with
disabilities into government, community and business leadership roles.
I'm intending to apply for a Churchill fellowship in the next couple of
weeks and would be interested in your perspectives on two things.
Firstly is Leadership by people with disabilities in a variety of
sectors an issue that has produced some interest and learning's
and secondly, are there organizations and policy directions in the UK
that would be worth while visiting in person rather than simply contacting.
A couple of the specific issues I would like to explore are;
* Is there a difference in leadership approaches within Europe? and or
* Is there a need for Leadership programs that specifically focus on
People with disabilities or should we think of such programs as
segregated and only focus our activities on breaking down barriers
to mainstream leadership programs? and or
* Will people with cognitive disabilities ever be considered capable
of leadership outside of the disability sector?
There are many more of course. Would it be worth while coming? Where
would be a strategic place to start?
I hope you have a few minutes to ponder with me.
Cheers
Stephen Gianni
