Having unintentionally provoked a bit of rhetoric here (slaps forehead,
should have realised!), I do feel a bit obliged to clarify myself. I am (of
course) aware of the argument in favour of utility/ordinary-clothes cycling
and I am (of course) in agreement with it. I'm just not convinced that the
effect of visibly "special" cycling kit is necessarily entirely negative in
all circumstances (even if it is on balance bad). The causes of behaviour
are incredibly complicated (well duh!) and in a way I was just re-stating
the cliche "there's no such thing as bad publicity".
("oh yes there is!" they chorus ... )
