The BBC took part in a major project in partnership with the National Sound
Archive at the British Library in 1999/2000, to mark the Millennium. The
project was called The Century Speaks - each BBC Local Radio station (and the
Nation stations too) had a dedicated producer who each gathered around 150 oral
history interviews from their patch (young , old, all backgrounds, to try and
capture the 'arc' of the century).
Then each producer used these interviews to make a 16 part series of half hour
docs that were broadcast on their station, around various themes (such as House
and Home, Leisure, Going Places, etc).
Finally all the oral history interviews went into the National Sound Archive for
posterity.
Whether any academic has done any follow up research I don't know. Dr Rob Perks
at the NSA/BL might be the person to ask.
(I was the producer for GLR94.9 in London - hence my anorak knowledge of the
subject!)
