Dear colleagues,
We are finalising plans for the next APHE conference and AGM to be held at
Napier in Edinburgh on the 27th and 28th April. I will write again very
soon but I thought some of you might like to book flights now while they are
available.
On the 27th we plan to have about 6 very experienced and proactive people to
outline their philosophy/point of view about photographic
education/education through photography. We are aiming for a broad range of
opinion without losing what is special, well thought out or detailed. The
audience, as you know, are our peer group - experienced, thoughtful, and who
like to hear the sounds of their own voices and get stuck into discussion!
So, our plan is to have two panels of three speakers who individually answer
the questions below, followed by discussion groups, followed by conference
re-convening (twice) to take the ideas further.
We have invited Anna Fox (artist photographer and photography programme
leader at the University College for the Creative Arts, Farnham), Rhonda
Wilson MBE (Seeing the Light, Rhubarb), Dr Sarah Edge (writer and associate
head of School of Media and Performing Arts, University of Ulster), Dr David
Bate (writer and senior lecturer, University of Westminster), Pippa Walkley
(Photo Imaging Sector Manager, Skillset), and John Kippen (artist and reader
in photography at the University of Sunderland).
This is what we have asked participants to address:
Is photography education an eclectic, fragmented, group of disparate
practices? If not, what is it that provides focus to this subject
specialism?
By considering this questioning, respond to the following:
What is essential to you (as an educator). Describe what you hold dear and
want to hold onto in photography education?
What do we (in the APHE) think photographic education/education through
photography, should be?
I hope you will join us. Conference will start at 10am on the 27th and
finish after the AGM at lunchtime on the 28th.
Kind regards,
Cary Welling
