A few cross thread points:
Spare - My main observation is that not only does the
Spare technique actually work, he utilises techniques
that I've more recently seen amongst Romanies (though
not English ones), these in turn connect with
something vaguer in my more distant experience. More
than that I can't really say. These techniques aren't
mind bogglingly complex though so it remains an
unlikely possibility that he might have just made a
lucky guess when he made it all up. :)
La Vey - Well I think his Satanic Commandments are
excellent too, apart from the petty right wing
judgementalism that runs through them. But they are
just fairly bog standard Hedonism nothing original in
them at all. My criticism would be this it ain't
Satanism, particulary with the judgemental moralism
that runs through them. I'd say it was La Vey's
Christian reactionism that undermines him most, not
his 'Satanism', if you can call his mix of Stinerite
Egoism, Classical Hedonism, emotional immaturity (if
not neurosis), and a very unliberated bourgeois
sensitivity, Satanism. I certainly wouldn't.
As I say, I don't have anything against Satanism,
traditional or reconstructed, nor do I think that
Satanists are necessarily immoral, but just that
there's serious Satanism, that is liberating for some
people, and has a definite role to play, and there's
faux Satanism, and I would put La Vey very much in
that last category.
Enochian - Enochian is facinating. Until recently I
would have thought of the language as just another
confusional induction technique for trance, and I
still think it mostly is that, but there does seem to
be a little more to it than that though. I'm currently
deconstructing the Enochian system (well the easy bits
any way, the whole system mat take somewhat longer!)
with the intention of reconstructing a Neo-Enochian
system along similar lines to Chaos Magic. With some
success already. But thats still in the works.
My preliminary conclusions are that classic Enochian
is really all 'Kelly's' work, with some encryptional
techniques supplied most likely by Dee (presumably
what Kelly was after). The techniques are quite
interesting though and again parallel older
techniques, some of which are very well known. So
again my suspicion is that he didn't invent these
techniques himself.
