Inform Seminar XXXVI
SPIRIT POSSESSION AND EXORCISM
DATE: Saturday, 13 May 2006; 9.30am - 4.30pm.
VENUE: New Theatre at the London School of Economics and Political Science
Belief in possession and the practice of exorcism can be found in a wide variety of religious forms. Sometimes possession by Gods, Spiritual Beings or magical powers (such as the Holy Spirit or Orisha) is positively sought or venerated; in other instances, possession by the Devil, evil spirits or malevolent forces is blamed for all manner of ills and believed to require exorcism - which could consist simply of prayer or involve some kind of intense physical intervention. Colourful images of 'The Exorcist' and lurid accounts in the media have made understanding the variety and intricacies of actual practices difficult. The Seminar will approach the subject from various perspectives, including academic and personal.
