Hi Doug..
>>For what it's worth, I've written a comparison of Luhrmann & Greenwood's
methodology: Ezzy, D. (2004) "Religious Ethnography: Practising the Witch's
Craft" in Blain, J., Ezzy, D., Harvey, G. Researching Paganisms, Alta Mira
Press.<<
Thanks for reminding me of this book. I just looked at your interesting
chapter & references of which I took note for library hunting... Feel like
buying Susan Greenwood's book now.... Will the book-shopping ever cease?!?
I'm interested in, as you say on page 125, there is a trend toward
ethnographies by insiders. Melissa Harrington's chapter - which also talks
about Lurhmann's study - briefly compares a young postgraduate (as Luhrmann
was) studying an esoteric group's approach, in which they are often a
"newbie" which affects the type of questions they'd be asking etc, with, as
Harrington herself has done, being a "native researcher" - which rather
appeals to me as well, in my circumstances.
