New FMO Research Guide on Sudan
Forced Migration Online has produced a new Research Guide on Sudan which is
now available on the FMO website.
The Darfur emergency in Sudan has been described as the world’s ‘worst
humanitarian disaster’ by UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs,
Jan Egeland. Sudan has a long history of conflict and displacement and hosts
the world’s largest internally displaced population. Since 1983, some 2
million Sudanese are estimated to have died as a result of conflict. About 1
million have fled to neighbouring countries, and some 6 million - one sixth of
the population - have been displaced within the country. Despite optimism
surrounding the peace agreement in the South of Sudan, conflict and
displacement elsewhere in the country show little sign of abating. In Darfur,
up to 2 million people have been displaced since only 2003 and the killings
and rapes continue despite the intervention of the international community.
