Hi, I'm interested in the concept of Voces Mysticae, or Magicae, which I see
used in, say, the PGM spells. I'm under the impression from my reading so
far that Voces Magicae were words that were thought to be secret names of
the gods, or other special "enforcing" words that were thought to at least
compel deities to do the magician's bidding within a magical ritual. Voces
Magicae seem to have been either garbled real languages (perhaps foreign to
the utterer however) or else made up words, or strings of vowels which were
thought to be, for some reason, magically efficacious. I also wonder if,
say, the idea of using foreign words / god names in later magic, and also
the "vibrating" the divine names in late 19th century Golden Dawn magic - or
even Enochian language - is not similar in idea to the Voces Magicae in that
it is being assumed that these "words of power", which might just consist of
actual *unfamiliar* deity or other names, are magically efficacious?
Musing also on the mention in some Tantra books I read years ago on Sabda,
or sound... then thinking of mantras as well...
My university library doesn't seem to be that forthcoming when I search
'voces magicae' or 'mysticae', although I have found interesting sections on
the the subject in other books, but not much however. Can anyone recommend
any specific studies on or around Voces Mysticae / Magicae? Or any books
with large sections on the subject?
Thanks,
~Caroline.
