You could do worse than take a look at the Dissent activist network at
http://dissent.org.uk/. The Dissent network played a major role in
organizing against the Gleneagles G8 last year, organized around loose
groupings of groups, parties and organizations and dedicated to the premise
of co-operative, collaborative and non-hierarchical resistance, including
the planning, setting-up and running of the rural gathering area outside
Stirling which, for a week or so, acted as home for gatherings of many
thousands of protesters.
In contrast to Bob and Bono Chuckle, the Chuckle Brothers capitalist cabaret
act, the resistance surrounding the Dissent network succeeded in creating
some fairly major chaos and effectively shutting down large parts of the
countryside around Gleneagles, aided and abetted by some truly innovative
and effective protest groups, especially the CIRCA (Clandestine Insurgent
Revolutionary Clown Army, the people in combat fatigues and clown make-up)
who will forever remain dear in my memory after I witnessed a clown walk up
to a line of fierce riot police on horse-back and trying to feed the horses
with a six foot papier-mache carrot.. wet myself? Oh yes!
If you access the site you can get hold of the book of the events organized
by Dissent, written by multiple authors, not only outlining what happened
but giving multiple and very different takes on participatory and
collaborative politics, told from a 'Horizontal' point-of-view... In direct
contrast to 'Make Poverty History', which was white people in white clothes
fitting in an extra summer event after Henley and Wimbledon.
Cheers!

Subject: participatory spaces of dissemination
Date: Wed, 1 Feb 2006 09:27:10 -0000
Hello (and apologies if you get more of this than you'd like)
I'm looking for examples of 'accessible', 'participatory',
'non-exclusionary' 'radical', 'different' (...etc) conferences, seminars and
other dissemination 'events' (especially large scale ones). I'm
particularly interested in how to maximise attendance/participation, the
workability (or otherwise) of interesting/non-traditional categorisation of
attendees (ie beyond 'member of...', 'guest' etc), tiered registration or
attendance fees, radical, cross-subsidisation of attendee costs, venue
accessibility and so on - what has been tried, what worked well, what
problems were encountered, what solutions to these problems found? Any
views/comments on the nature and extent of the 'problem' of inequitable
access to getting your ideas/views 'out there' is also welcome.
Cheers
