Dear Patrick,
Our collections here at Epping Forest District Museum include the
Waltham Abbey Historic Police Collection, which contains examples of all
the standard service-issue breathalyser kits used prior to the switch
from the Met to the Essex force. Although the geographical links seem a
bit tenuous, it could sit quite well in that aspect of our collections
and I can personally guarantee that it would be interpreted as a social
history artefact.
Some other alternatives to consider would be the Metropolitan Police
Historical Collection(020 7230 8238) or investigating whether Slough
Museum (01753 526422) retains anything relating to the work of the Road
Research Laboratory.
Hope this helps.

The first ever piloted breathelyser kit in the uk has come into my
possession. It contains all the original chrystals but has probably
dried out over the years ( no pun intended ). I want to offer it to a
suitable museum, which was the intention of the owner who designed it.
However rather than offer it to a large museum such as one of the
motor
museums or national science or transport museums I would rather it
went
to a smaller museum where it would be interpreted more sensitively as
a
piece of social history rather than a scientific piece ? Has anyone
got
any suggestions ? Secondly how should I be conserving it to stop
further
deterioration?
