Hi,
Ive just moved into a house in Country Leitrim, Ireland, that was built
around 1920, and have discovered a spring well out the back.
Its quite well over grown but consists of a small muddy pool surrounded
by large stones, with a trickling stream bubbling forth from the earth
just above it.
Ive done what I can to uncover the original stones that surround the
area, including a stone path under about 2 inches of soil. Im curious
however as to its history, use, and perhaps how it would have looked
originally.
One interesting feature is a large slate slab which sits at the foot of
the pool, almost lining the entrance to the large ditch draining the
spring down my garden. It seems like it would have been used to block
the stream off so that the pool would fill with water for bathing ? Is
that a common feaure ?
Im not sure if its a Holy Well particularly, but it honestly looks like
every other Holy Well Ive seen in my time (and thats quite a few).
If anyone could point me to historical information about the use of
springs/wells in early 20th Ireland, and how it may be restored, or how
I might find some more information about it I'd be very grateful indeed.
Thanks for your time.
Andy
