Thank you so much everyone for responding on this. Most of you affirmed

college are very new to getting things going so it great to be able to

We had similar reluctance from some. The main arguments we made were:
1) Lectures should impart rather more than what is written down. If
they don't why not just do handouts and save the time and trouble?
2) VLEs as a means of distributing notes isn't a new idea. Previously
all a student needed to do was borrow someone's notes and use the
photocopier!
3) At least this way students can get the handouts much later when
revising if they loose theirs
4) The VLE can be used to distribute information *beforehand* thus
engaging students more.

We are beginning to rollout our portal with staff and there is some
reticence from them regarding making resources available to students
after lectures in case students don't turn up for lessons, which will
affect our attendance records and funding.
Has anyone any preventative measures of such a thing or could point me
in the direction of evidence of this not being the case - I need to be
able to defend the cause!!
Thanks a lot
