| Hi adam - I would be interested to know if indeed any universities have
| changed over from an institutional Bb/W-CT system to Moodle. Though some
| of
| the recent surveys on the lists have indicated a substantial move to
| Moodle
| in FE, I haven't seen much evidence of changeover in HE. And I guess it
| depends what you are changing over from - if you start with a "pilot"
| implementation of a VLE, with just a few users, it is not the same as
| switching from a fully embedded widely used one. The cost and effort of
| migration of content, re-building of courses, re-training of staff etc
| would
| be huge.
|
That's how we think too.
I suspect that the commercial VLE companies will play down the cost of
migration. I could also imagine a staff revolt after the migration has been
done, there would be lots of resources which simply get lost or corrupted in
the move. The new service would have to be piloted for a year, and then a
second phase of migration would have to be entered. And then a third phase
to take into account of all the things added whilst the second phase was
underway. I wouldn't like to project manage that!!
Think also of the documentation that departments will have to change.
Still - that's probably what is going to have to happen to Web CT users when
n-years down the line, it is replaced by Blackboard. Perhaps even worse
still, what if WebCT moves slowly towards Blackboard, then the documentation
will have to be rewritten every summer to take account of the incremental
changes.
Here's a pertinent Dilbert cartoon:

if (hopefully this UR:L will not get snapped in two - 'tinyurl' seems to be
down at present!

| Can I just point out that Oxford are NOT considering switching from
| Bodington VLE. We are more than happy with this platform. I was just
| curious
| to find out if any studies had been done.
|
| I figured that a few institutions must have switched from Bb/W-CT to
| Moodle
| in the last year or so.

| | Has anybody ever looked at the cost of switching VLEs? I'd be interested
| | if
| | anybody had a formula for this.
