CARLSBAD -- Fearing that the Eddy County Commission was going to axe
the controversial Lifeline program at the Eddy County Detention
Center, supporters showed up in force Tuesday to urge the commission
to let the program continue.
Their effort to convince the majority of the commissioners that the
program is working was successful -- at least for now.

Explaining the program, Leslie Johnson, Eddy County Detention Center
warden, said it is a modified therapeutic community program. She said
therapeutic communities were originally developed to treat hardcore
heroin-dependent criminals. Now, she said, the program addresses
other addictions, such as abusive behavior, criminal activity and
associated problems that reduce an individual's capacity to function
appropriately in society.
