Yes. Well, case-insensitive file systems make that hard in general
so I use CHR_SIMLR rather than .EQ. when checking for DAT__FLEXT. It
shouldn't matter though since HDS_SPLIT will look for the "SDF" component
before deciding whether it is a component or a filename.

You can specify what the start and end characters are.

HDS is a problem though since Brian's rewrite in C completely destroyed
the prologues for most of the public API...
