Fellows are invited to submit applications for grants, normally for
sums between £250 and £5000, for the 2006 Feb 1 deadline; applications
are particularly encouraged for undergraduate research bursaries.

RAS THESIS PRIZES - JANUARY 31 DEADLINE

The Royal Astronomical Society invites nominations for:
The Michael Penston Prize, awarded annually for the best doctoral
thesis in Astronomy or Astrophysics. The prize of £1000 is sponsored
jointly by PPARC and Wiley.
The RAS-Blackwell Prize, awarded annually for the best doctoral thesis in
Exploration Geophysics;
Physics of the Earth's Atmosphere, Ionosphere or Magnetosphere;
Planetary Physics;
Solar Physics; or
Solid-Earth Geophysics
The prize of £1000 is sponsored by Blackwell Publishing.
The prizes are open to students of all nationalities submitting a doctoral
thesis to a United Kingdom university, and are not restricted to
Fellows of the RAS. Nominations should:
* be submitted a Fellow of the Society (normally the student's
examiner or supervisor)
* be in the form of a citation of not more than 500 words
* be accompanied by a copy of the thesis abstract
* gve the names of two referees familiar with the thesis, at least
one of whom should be affiliated to an academic or research
establishment other than that of the candidate. Suitable referees
would be the candidate's internal and external examiners for the
doctorate.
Nominations for the award must be received by the Executive Secretary
by January 31 of the year following that in which the thesis was
recommended for the award of a doctorate by the examiners.

RAS COUNCIL NOMINATIONS

Fellows are encouraged to submit nominations (or to consider having
themselves nominated) for the Council of the RAS. Nominations must be
sent to the RAS Executive Secretary, David Elliott, at Burlington
House, to arrive not later than noon on 2006 February 3.

IAU MEMBERSHIP

The RAS is the UK National Member of the International Astronomical
Union. As such it is responsible for maintaining an up-to-date list
of individual UK memebers (and for paying their IAU subscription).
New individual members are elected at the IAU General Assemblies. If
you, or any of your UK-based colleagues, want to be nominated for IAU
membership at the 2006 Prague General Assembly, the application form
on the RAS web site should be completed and returned to Burlington
House by 2006 Feb 15 at the latest.

Liverpool John Moores University has been awarded a Queen's
Anniversary Prize (part of the honours system) for Higher and Further
Education, for the work of the Astrophysics Research Insitute.
Prof. David Gubbins (Leeds) has been awarded the IoP Chree Medal &
Prize.
The PULSE (Pulsar Science in Europe) collaboration, led by
Prof. Andrew Lyne (Manchester) has been awarded the European
Commission's 2005 Descartes Prize for research.
RAS Gold Medallist Prof. Stan Cowley (Leeds) has also been awarded the
Julius Bartels Medal of the EGU.
