FYI: This new award should be of interest. It is being announced in the
January issue of the AAG newsletter. Note that it is not restricted to
either dissertations done in the USA.
A best dissertation award for scientific research in the area of
computational geography will be made every second year for dissertations
successfully defended over the previous two year period ending on 31
August. Although primarily designed to stimulate computer oriented
scientific investigations within the discipline of geography, this award
is not to be restricted to dissertations in this discipline. The award is
also not limited to doctoral degrees awarded in the United States.
Initially, the award is to consist of a $3,500 cash prize and an
accompanying certificate of merit. There is only to be a single prize
winner identified (no honorable mentions, etc.) Subsequent to the award,
the Trustees shall make every effort to secure the publication of the
contents of the winning dissertation. If, in the opinion of the Trustees,
no dissertation of sufficient merit is presented in any given award period
then no award is to be made. If an award is not made, then the funds
that would have made up the cash prize for that year are to be
permanently returned to the Marble Fund for Geographic Science for
reinvestment. The timing and amount of this award are subject to review
and possible change at five year intervals by unanimous action of the
Trustees.
This award will initially be offered for dissertations successfully
defended in the period starting 1 January 2004 and extending through 31
August 2006.
