To put a little more precision, Al, I both deny it and accept it. For
example, both my dad and my grandad fought for the British Forces in WW2 and
WW1 respectively. My grandad got run over by a Brit tank in, I think
Passchendale, because they had problems with the gears, when they went into
forward they switched into reverse, with the result that he, who was
invalided out the war, survived, along with one of his lucky brothers but
minus five of the unluckies.
My dad was in North Africa, Sicily and Normandy: he would never tell me much
about it except once I asked him (me aged eight) 'Daddy did you ever kill a
man?'. 'Yes', he said, "I shot this German at close range but (in answer to
my next question) I didn't know who he was.'
So innocence and guilt go together Al.
Best
Dave
