Thanks Barry
Yes there is that one, it also corresponds with the plan from a lease [I
presume] in ZBO V. The problem was that the 1760 Lease in ZIF clearly said
that Townsend had built the mill at the foot of Scatterscar Hush. That was
the only document available until the Bolton papers were put in the RO so
it had stuck in my mind.
Having given it more thought I suppose that he could have repaired the old
mill but still found it unsuitable and so built the new mill about 1765.
Wm Chaytor had used the lack of a suitable mill for smelting ore in dispute
at Cobscar in 1760. So, it is begining to look likely that the old Bobscar
mill was used throughout the early 18th cent at least.
Most of the earlier accounts dont mention any other smelt mill other than
the Preston Mill (at one time there were three smelt mills near Wensley).
Early 18th cent documents mention "The Apedale Smeltmill account"
or "Cobscar Smelt mill account" but could quite easily have been the smelt
mill accounts for those mines but smelted at Preston Mill.
