medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. January) is the feast day of:
Fructuosus of Tarragona (d. 259) Fructuosus was a Spanish bishop.
He and two deacons were arrested in Valerian's persecution. Their
acta are authentic and tell a rather grisly tale of burning alive.
Agnes (d. c. 305) Legend tells that Agnes was a 13-year-old Roman
girl (very beautiful, of course), who was a dedicated virgin. She
refused to accept any suitors and was denounced as a Christian as a
result. The judge wasn't amused by this virginity nonsense, and
ordered her exposed naked in a brothel (her hair instantly grew to
cover her, says a later version). She so awed the clients that
nobody troubled her but the prefect's son---who was struck blind.
Finally A was beheaded. A's cult was early and popular.
Epiphanius of Pavia (d. 506) Epiphanius was a bishop of Pavia. He
rebuilt Pavia after King Odoacer and his army destroyed it. He seems
to have been an extremely good pastor in a particularly confused and
dangerous time. His relics made their way to Hildesheim in 963 and
are still there.
Meinrad (d. 861) Meinrad became a monk at Reichenau but went on to a
hermitage in c. 829, moving to the site that eventually became the
monastery of Einsiedeln. He was clubbed to death by robbers and yes,
is regarded as a martyr.
