TRAUMA AND MEMORY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
Saturday 28th January 2006
0915-1300
Brighton and Sussex Medical School lecture theatre,
University of Sussex, Falmer
Holocaust Memorial Day is an annual event that offers the opportunity for
us to reflect on the impact not only of the Nazi Holocaust, but also of
other genocides and traumatic events in the Twentieth Century. The memory
of the murder of millions of Jews, Gypsies, Gay people and others deemed
'unworthy of life' in the Holocaust has entered our culture, and its
associated trauma has affected not only the survivors but later generations
across the globe. In the sixty years since the liberation of the camps in
Europe we have seen other examples of conflict and trauma that are
remembered and recorded in many different ways.
This morning workshop has been organised by the Centre for Life History
Research and the Centre for German-Jewish Studies at the University of
Sussex to offer an opportunity to learn and reflect on issues of trauma and
memory in the Twentieth Century.
